CHARLES C. MITCHELL SR. Here is another Mitchell family from Santee with links to the Trudells. Charles is my most interesting and challenging ancestor, my GGGGrandfather. I have not been able to find any information about his birth or parentage. What I do know- His father was born in England and his mother was born in Michigan. Charles C. Mitchell was born in Wisconsin in about 1820. He married Elizabeth/Eliza- Mahpiyapahdewin, date and location unknown. Their children- John, Joseph, Charles Jr., George, and Amelia/Millie. In 1853 he lived at/near Traverse des Sioux and is mentioned in the book “Old Traverse des Sioux” by Thomas Hughes, p. 62. In 1854 he went on an outing with Little Crow which he wrote about in the Word Carrier- May, 1887.

He served with the 10th MN Infantry as a Private for 2 years. He was present at Camp Release, working as a cook for the soldiers. 1865 County census- He lived in Mendota, Dakota County, MN. Wife Eliz. Three children, Charles, George, Emily (Millie). 1870 Federal census- Lived at Granite Falls, Chippewa County, MN. 1873- Daughter Millie married to Fred LaCroix at Hawk Creek, Renville County, MN. 1874- First appeared on the Santee Indian Census. Lived alone. Age 60. (?) Member of Husasa’s band. 1877- Acted as official interpreter for the Santee on signing of the Treaty of 1877. 1880 Federal Census- Lived at Santee. Widowed. Age 61. 1882- Acted as official interpreter for the Santee on signing of the Treaty of 1882. 1883- Supreme Court Case- United States vs. Mitchell

1885- Appears on the Census of Santee Indians. Lives alone. Age 66. 1890- Surviving Soldiers Census. Resides at Santee. 1894- the last year Charles appears on the Santee Indian census. Age 75. Feb. 11 or 13, 1895 died at Santee. Charles is listed as ‘white” on all documents. However, he had an allotment number in 1874, received an allotment of land, had an Indian name, Tahanse, and appeared on all Santee Indian Censuses. Charles’ son, Charles C. Mitchell Jr (who was later known as Sr. after his father died), married Lillie LaCroix in June 1873 at Hawk Creek, MN. They settled at Santee and had at least the following children- Ellen c. 1872 Louis c. 1873 William c. 1875 George c. 1879 (m. Mary Rouillard) Mary c. 1882 Bertie c. 1884 (m. This is an obit for Clarence L. Mitchell who died during WWII in Italy. He is survived by an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchell. This would be John and Cecelia (Trudell).
